Machined heatsinks are typically made from Aluminum 6061 or Copper C1100, and quick turn prototyping is available. Although larger designs are possible, typical limits are typically 20 fins – 1.2” high.

Copper is tough to machine so we usually recommend the forged, skived , or stamped fin processes. For larger volume Aluminum production, our team will also investigate extrusion, and Die-cast processes.
Machined Heatsinks Using State-of-the-Art Equipment
In the first half of 2025, Radian’s machining division completed the acquisition of a Matsuura MX-420. Capable of handling a 10 pallet work setup up to 175 lbs, which is 100 lbs more than the UMC500 AX5 pallet system, the MX-420 PC10 allows for the automation of significantly heavier parts. Its ergonomic design, coupled with Matsuura’s advanced unmanned automation capabilities, thus ensures up to 85% uptime. This machine seamlessly supports both manned and unmanned operations, making it adaptable to diverse production environments.
The upgrade of the machine shop was followed by the acquisition of the Trinity AI-1 automated part-loading system, built with Intrinsic Intelligence, an advanced robotics systems adapted to high-mix, short-run production. The Trinity AI-1 is an adaptive CNC automation that learns, adjusts, & executes — delivering reliable, unattended production across changing part demands. The result is lights-out manufacturing for quick-turn prototyping.

In this example, a large 300mm X 140mm X 60mm custom heatsink was completely machined from billet including additional needed precision features
